Tips to Lower Your Shipping Cost Per Pair
1. Optimize Carton Efficiency
Most factories use 12-pair cartons for basketball shoes and 16-pair cartons for running shoes. Ask your supplier to pack to max carton density — air in the carton is money you're paying to ship. A 40-foot container holds ~5,000 pairs of running shoes but only ~3,500 basketball shoes due to box size. Choose your mix wisely.
2. Consolidate Shipments
Never ship 50 pairs express — the cost per pair is obscene. Consolidate to at least 150kg/150 pairs for air freight and 500+ pairs for sea freight to get the per-kg rates above. If you're doing small test orders (30-50 pairs), accept that shipping will be 2-3x the per-pair cost of bulk — it's the price of testing.
3. Use a Freight Forwarder, Not the Supplier's Shipper
Suppliers often mark up shipping 15-25% through their "preferred" forwarders. Get your own freight forwarder quotes for the same route and compare. I've saved $1,200 on a single 500-pair shipment just by using my own forwarder instead of the factory's. This is especially important on air freight where margins are tight.
4. Time Your Shipments Strategically
Sea freight from China to US West Coast can spike from $3.50/kg to $7.00/kg during peak season (August through October, before holiday shopping). If you're stocking for Q4, get your shipments out by July. The 30-40% premium on peak-season shipping eats margins that are already thin on competitive models.
